Liquid crystal display

The liquid crystal display used in laptop computers utilizes a property of liquid crystals whereby transparent dots become opaque when power is applied. The liquid crystals themselves emit no light, so either natural light or a back light is required to make the image visible.

Color LCDs rely on an array of elements that have filters for each RGB color. Color quality is inferior to that of a CRT display.
